Funny Things to Draw on Blanca in Animal Crossing

TheAnimal Crossingseries has long been known for its slew of unique, colorful animal villagers, which has certainly continued with the latest Switch release,New Horizons.

But even among this pool of interesting critters - the strange, faceless cat known as "Blanca" tends to stand out in particular. Dating all the way back to the originalACon GameCube, this villager's always been a curiosity in her elusive ways, unique traits, and her desire to mess with players' heads in different ways.

Given her mysterious nature, we feel it's fitting to delve a little deeper and examine this peculiar cat more thoroughly. So without further ado, here are 10 interesting Blanca facts, theories, and trivia you probably haven't heard about.

10 The Significance Of Her Name

Those who are well-versed in Spanish might recognize the name of this mysterious cat as translating directly to the word "white" in English. This is fitting, given the hues of this villager - or lack thereof.

Yet, there may be more to this name than meets the eye. It's very likely that Nintendo also intended this to be a play on the word "blank," which also goes with the unique motif of this character.

9 Her Original Face Is Made Of Japanese Writing

Dating back to the originalAnimal Crossingon GameCube, Blanca was depicted with a rather odd default face within the game art. As it happens, this is a form of Japanese writing; specifically called "hiragana" characters. In Japan, it is common practice amongst schoolchildren to arrange some of these characters in a fashion that resembles a cartoon face.

This is tagged with the mouthful of a word, "henohenomoheji." It's called this because each symbol (he, no, he, no, mo, he, ji) represents a portion or symbol on the face.

Following the popularity ofAnimal Crossingreaching Western shores, however, this unique look was replaced with a generic smiley face.

8 Her Name Is Misspelled In The Prima Games Studyguide

via: nintendowire.com

Ironically, the otherwise in-depth and elaborate Prima Games guide forAnimal Crossingcame with a rather basic flub. Their listing of Blanca is actually misreferred to as "Bianca." This resides amongst a handful of other minor errors in the guide, including a picture of Jane the gorilla replacing June the islander.

Oddly enough, thereistechnically a Bianca in theAnimal Crossinguniverse, as Whitney - anothercat - holds the Japanese name of "Bianca." There also exists Bianca the tiger villager, who makes an appearance inNew Leaf. One could certainly understand the confusion, given all this overlap.

7 The Curious Case Of Her Changing Faces

Most know Blanca for her peculiar faceless features, and the evenweirderability to have someone draw a functioning face on her. Yet, many don't realize the extent to which her face sees frequent changes as time rolls in onAnimal Crossing.

In the originalAC, she may oddly appear with an entirely different drawn face than the one the player settled on after awhile. On top of this, every time she washes her face, it reverts back to a blank canvass, at which point you'll have to craftanotherface for her.

6 Possibly Gender Neutral

While we've thus-far referred to Blanca as "her," it's quite possible she could be a gender-neutral character in theAnimal Crossingworld. Not only does she hold no defining masculine or feminine features, but she's also referred to both a female (in the Western releases)anda male in the Japanese versions.

She's given a female voice in the originalAnimal Crossing, but actually has a male voice inWild Worldand succeeding games, even in the non-Japanese versions. We'll keep referring to Blanca as "her" for now, as that is how the Western games describe her.

5 An Illusive Curiosity To Villagers

SeasonedAnimal Crossingplayers have noted that it's not uncommon for villagers to refer to their fellow inhabitants throughout the game. But when it comes to Blanca, there's a particular elusive quality to her that seems to cause some to question where she is and what she's up to.

For instance, The Roost inWild Worldwill frequently refer to a "mysterious cat" and will ask the player if they've seen her. Fittingly, a player that gets their fortune told in Katrina's fortune shop may also mention this elusive critter.

4 Can't Recognize The Facial Detail Drawn

While Blanca takes on a number of unique traits and actions for eachACentry, she can be particularly odd inCity Folkfor Wii. While you're tasked with drawing a face for her like usual, Blanca seemingly won't recognize any difference in the drawing's detail.

Basically, you can spend minutes crafting a nuanced, visually-appealing work of art, or hastily scribble a mess, and she won't know the difference.

Blanca's lack of an ability to analyze your picture is a bit worrisome, as it gives the potential for pranksters to craft lude sketches and showcase them via WiiConnect24.

3 Mysterious Appearance Conditions In Wild World

Blanca's presence in Wild World for Nintendo DS can be a headscratcher as well.

To get her to appear in this game, you'll have to switch on "Mysterious Cat" mode, which is achieved by using the phone in the attic. On top of this, you'll need to have used the Wi-Fi functionality for the game - and even then she onlymightappear, assuming both of these conditions are met. Blanca is nothing if not sporadic and random...

2 Takes Part In An April Fools' Prank

When it comes to Blanca's showing in 3DS'New Leaf, she fittingly pops up as part of an amusing April Fools' Day gag. This is the first and only instance in which she'll take on the traits of the Pokémon Ditto, by copying the appearance of other villagers.

This will prompt a sort of minigame in which you'll need to pick out the faker and the real villager based on some dialogue tidbits. If the correct guess is made, the player will be gifted a picture of that villager. If this is pulled off successfully forallvillagers, they'll be rewarded a coveted Blanca picture the next day via mail.

1 May Represent a Faceless Japanese Ghost

If there's one key trait most have gathered with this villager, it's that she has a mysterious, almostghostlyquality to her. At least one fan has theorized that there may be something more to this notion.

In fact, Nintendo may have drawn on the influence of a Japanese ghost or demon named Noppera-bo for Blanca's traits. To review - you've got the parallels of this ghost being faceless, in addition to disappearing in thin air and pulling tricks on the living. Sound familiar?

Given Nintendo's tendency to toss in subtle references to Japanese folklore and culture, it's quite likely this is the case.
